Camaraderie institutionalized; Bonding in extreme situations

There is something strangely familiar in the dynamics of a group of people sharing a hospital room; Hospital uniforms stripping away external signs of status; Rigid schedules for all actions; Symbiotic relationship between staff and inmates; Clear hierarchy and strict boundaries in staff duties. And almost instantaneous, near brotherly bonding, swapping life stories and planning life after the institution.

Ring any bells? Right!

Hogan’s Heroes.

Or indeed any prison movie, war movie, or prisoner of war series.

Extreme discomfort, pain, isolation and uncertainty of the future, brings the best and worst out of people.

Heroism and cowardice; Selflessness and  selfishness; Use and misuse of power & control, all become larger than life.

Best and worst of humanity in one tragic comedy…Image
